Balance Your Heating System

One of our most common service calls is for rooms that are “too hot” or “too cold”. If you have this problem, you’re probably wasting energy. If you’re willing to spend some time, you can get your system just right.

Here’s how:
  1. Open the dampers in the duct system and all the registers in each room.
  2. Set your thermostat to the level you like.
  3. Place a thermometer near the middle of each room at table height.
  4. Check the thermometers during the day.
  5. For the rooms that are too warm, partially close the duct system damper supplying those rooms.
  6. If only one room is too warm, partially close the register(s) in that room.
  7. Take more readings until you’re satisfied with your system’s balance.
  8. Mark the damper or registers so you’ll know this setting in the future.

You’ve just increased your comfort, and maybe lowered your utility bills! If this sounds too troublesome, we’d be glad to help. We’ve got measuring devices for accuracy and speed.

Is Your Heater Trying to Tell You Something?

How would you characterize your relationship with your heater or furnace? Smooth sailing? Needs improvement? Neglected?
The home comfort system that takes nearly half of your household energy budget may be asking for a little time and attention. Whether you’re toasty warm this winter and how much you’re shelling out to your utility company are among the ways it communicates its needs.

Maintain Your HVAC System

Changing your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) filter once a month or so maximizes your system’s performance, minimizes its energy usage and ensures that the system keeps the inside of your home comfortable.  And this one step saves 350 pounds of CO2 each year.  If you don’t know how to change your filter, have a routine system check performed by a qualified HVAC technician (like ours!) and have him show you how to do regular filter changes in the future.  Just give us a call – we’ll be happy to take care of this for you.
